Has anyone here tried the rubber mulch? I saw some today in nice colors at my local home store. Just wondering if anyone has had success with it.

Haven't tried it, but it works. And it will NEVER rot. Doesn't hold water but does keep moisture in the soil. Heats up a bit more than other mulches also.

Sorry, I'm sure you've seen the pros and cons before. I've never seen it for sale, I may need to find some in red for my tomatoes!

Our local walmrt put it in thier parking lot shrubs, and it STINKS when it heats up, like when you smell someone skidding thier tires, only on a large scale. Assumming you're also in zone 10, you may not want to deal with the odor.

Back in the 70's some brilliant minds got the intelligent idea to dump unwanted tires in the ocean. Fast forward 30 some years later and now the experts are scratching their heads trying to figure out ways to clean up the TOXIC mess. Who'd have thunk sea water would deteriorate rubber?

Now brilliant minds have thought up the intelligent idea to shred up rubber and put it on our soil. No doubt someone claims all the "toxic" stuff has been removed. But still, everyone knows the sun, wind, rain, and time won't break down rubber, right?

My instincts are screaming that rubber mulch is probably a bad idea. I think I'll err on the side of caution and stick to Mama Nature approved mulches; the mulches that actually have something beneficial to contribute to the soil. It would prove way too costly if, once again, the experts in their infinite wisdom are wrong.

I have used rubber mulch for the past three years. I only use it on walkways and not around plants. I am very satisfied with the results. I use the dark brown color and it make a nice background for my stepping stone. I like the savings. I paid about $9 per bag so the initial investment is more than wood mulch but I have not need to replace the rubber mulch.
