Help! What did I just add to my garden?!

Help. I recently used some peat moss and potting soil that I had stored in my shed. I was planting some small lettuce seeds and I wanted some fine soil on top of my compost to give them a better start. After added the peat and potting soil to some of my squares, I noticed these funny bally ball things. Then I realized they were EVERYWHERE in the soil that I just mixed. I checked the bag of peat and the bag of potting soil in the shed. They were FULL of these "things". Please, can anyone identify what they are? they look and are the size of tapioca. They have a see-through-like shell until left in the sun, then they go opaque. When squished, they are full of a non-smelling liquid. UGH! What have I added to my garden? And why were they in the bags that were in my enlosed shed? Also, both bags were more than 3/4 full and were purchased in March or April.
