Newbie in Phoenix

I have been reading the posts as this fall will be my first garden. It is still scorching here in the Phoenix area and I would appreciate some guidence on when to start planting. I will start with only 1 or 2 beds and have some questions about placement. My house faces the brutal west so my initial gardens will be along north and south walls in backyard. A local expert said to plant where there is full sun. Does that make sense for this type of garden? Also I want to have tomatoes, eggplant, peppers and herbs. Broccoli and Cauliflower would also be great, but I read the recent post about the aphids, they are very bad here. Any tips on when should I start my seed? (I just noticed the recent posts suggested sowing in ground rather than starting indoors)

thanks

Welcome to sfg. I don't know alot about planting in Ariz., but there is a forum just for Arizona gardening on this site. You might also check with a local university or a cooperative extension nearby. They would have planting charts for when to plant. Hope this helps.

RE: Newbie in Phoenix

Thanks Kath,

I placed a call with the U Of A Extension, I was hoping someone on the forum might have had some experience with a west exposure. Mine is horrible because it is direct the entire time it is setting. This "fall" planting may not get done until late winter (spring) as I am now on the vermiculite hunt. There is a local mfg but no one seems to carry it. Lots to do!

thanks again
Pat
