Peas after onions?

Posted by dianezone7ok (My Page) on

Hi all, this is my first year with raised beds and SFG and the crop rotation is a little more intense than I'm used to. I know you aren't supposed to grow onions and peas together as the peas won't grow well. I have just pulled out my onions for the year and want to reuse the space, and thought peas would be great there, a couple weeks from now. Will any remnants of the onions or their chemicals in the soil stunt my peas?

RE: Peas after onions?

Last year I planted a row of peas against the side of my house and then a row of onions about 1.5 feet in front of the peas.

The peas did very well and the onions did as well as can be done with onion sets.

This year I planted the peas in the same spot and some tomatoes in front of the peas (where the onions were). The tomatoes are the largest I've ever had them (but I did fill with completely new compost soil last year) but the peas did horrid. I blame the bad harvest on the extremely hot weather we had this year that came in quick. Even the lettuce did poorly and didn't get much from it.

So can you put peas/onions together? I didn't have any trouble and all worked well.
