Just Completed All New SFG Book

Hi There

I just completed the All New Square Foot Gardening Book and it seemed interesting. I had a few questions and thought this forum would have a number of experts to answer my queries. So here I go:

1/ With respect to heavy feeders like Tomatoes and Cucumbers, will they be ok with the one time 1/3rd compost in the Mel's Mix that is put at the time of planting the veggies. I felt Mel's book said it is sufficient. However, just wanted to confirm from your experiences.

2/ The 6 inches of soil. Doesn't that sound too less for huge plants like Toms and Cukes? In addition to less space for roots, the soil can get heated up and will heat up the roots.

3/ When we have only 6 inches of soil and those wooden pieces are also six inches high, how can the Mulch be bound inside those limits? I live in a hot desert climate and mulching is sometimes required even in the winters.

Will appreciate your expert views.

Regards

Saood
