Vermiculite at $7.25 for a 4 cu.ft. bag.

I was able to purchase coarse (#3) Vermiculite at $7.25 per four cubic foot bags. I found a place that sells it primarily as an additive for commercial concrete roofs. It's worth asking a local commercial roof company if they use vermiculite in concrete roofs and who their supplier is.
This company frequently sells it to gardeners and had no problems selling me a dozen bags. They do have different sizes, make sure you ask for the coarse size.

Great find! And I thought I did well at $14-something per bag. I'll keep this in mind come springtime. Thanks!

After reading this, I started calling around to roofing supply companies. They'd never even heard of the stuff, lol. I guess we don't have a lot of concrete roofs around here or something, but I'm still on the hunt for cheap vermiculite or Turface. Other than in gardens and in roofing, what other applications is it used in and does it have any alternate names?

My vermiculite search has been so unsuccessful. Both of the garden companies around here want upwards of $30 for 3/.4-4cu ft. bags. Considering I need about 20cu ft., that works out to too large of a chunk of change for me.

Hey you guys.. I have a bed with vermiculite in it, but I found out that vermiculite can contain asbestos, so you might want to think about using pearlite instead.

I just googled "asbestos vermiculite" and a lot of articles came up. You can read them for yourself.

The vermiculite/asbestos problem was brought to light quite a few years ago. Vermiculite currently being used is asbestos free.

Wow;
Great find I will try to find it around here. Best I could do for course was 25$ for 4 cu.ft.and home insulation for 9$ a 3 cu.ft. bag witch is a finer grade. I will need some for next year. The bug has bit this fall. I am expanding my sfg. Ho-Ra!
Thanks Curt.

At what company did you find the $7.25 vermiculite?

I found 4 cu. foot bags of coarse vermiculite at the Greenhouse Mega Store website. The best price I could find...even with shipping. $20 a bag. There was $13 shipping (a few months ago). Here's the link:

They delivered the bag right away. I was very happy with my purchase. So are my plants.

It's amazing how difficult vermiculite is to find in different parts of the country. agronomy84, that is a great price! Thanks for sharing that roofing companies also use vermiculite.
