ROFL, I think you've stumbled into an alternate universe on this forum. Some of us advocate chemicals and some don't, but for the most part we're about the practical. My dad swears by miracle grow tomato fert and he is an AMAZING gardener. Like he tosses seeds and jumps back to keep from them hitting him. It's 18/18/21. I really haven't needed fertilizer this year (probably just got lucky), but I have used worm compost and I put about a third of my fish tank water on my garden once a week. I'm really a cheapo, though. I'm even thinking about getting worms in order to get their poop (pretty miserly, eh?) The guy who lived next door to us when we first got here was doing some form of chemical experimentation in his back yard, so I figure he's probably already beaten up the water table in our area, lol, I'll try to go easy.

I'm not anti-fertilizer as much as I'm anti-bug killers (use them only as a last resort). I always looked for a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer, because that's what James Underwood Crockett always used in his Victory Garden. Anything J. U. C. did was (and still is) good enough for me. Now I buy the pelleted slow release stuff that lasts 4-6 months, and I apply it just once in the spring. A jar of that (generic Osmocote type) is about $6 at Wallmart, and lasts me for at least a year, using it on veggies and flowers. The last one I bought was 17-17-17, but I just used less of it, seemed to work just fine, although I do think it's a bit high in nitrogen as my bush beans are awfully tall and leafy. I might change my plan of attack next year and use one that is lower in nitrogen. BTW, I didn't use any on my bunny greens bed, but I sprinkled that with alfalfa pellets (rabbit chow) and it's growing like mad! Seemed to by just the right amount of nitrogen, along with the rich compost.
