If the weeds are a really tough, invasive type, I'd go with the cardboard. Otherwise, several thicknesses of newspaper should do the job.

I agree with Granny. One of the beautiful things about SFG is that you don't have to dig...and, once the beds are filled, soil 'tilling' can be done with your hand, one square at a time. :)

I agree with granny, too. One of the things I recently found out is that most newspapers use soy based inks now both in color and black and white, so probably would not hurt your veggies at all.

I agree with the others. No dig and use cardboard. It's how I started all my box beds. It's how I start any garden bed for that matter, flower or vegetable.

I don't think there would be anything toxic in the cardboard but I would stick with the plain brown ones, no white, no shiny with pictures.

I take off as much tape too but I don't drive myself crazy about it. I have come across pieces of tape a year or so later. I just pull them up then and discard.

If you will be planting anything like horseradish, rhubarb or asparagus spade in lots of compost where they are to be planted, before you place the boxes.
