They eat compost, lol, that's why they're in your boxes! I had an enormous amount in my romaine this year and they never touched any of the plants as far as I could tell. Plus, it was kind of cool to see em in there.

i read something just like that. heck it might have been that one!! LOL new question!!! how do you get rid of those gnats in your soil???? apparently, this much i do know from last winter, in the winter sowing forum, and of course i had quite a discussion!! hee Hee, but the gnats eggs live in the soil, and when the soil is wet thouroghly they are hatch, if you water from the bottom you don't have the bottom no problem, but when i transferred the soil to these crates, the tops never dried out, so the gnats got hatched. now my problem becomes how to get rid of them. also how to water them crates and not get new gnats?? or are they all hatched by now? ~Medo

Medo, I bought a houseplant last winter, and it had gnats. I never did get rid of them...I finally used a spray that killed them, but then new ones would hatch in just a day or two. Over and over. The plant froze on the trip back north in April, and I wasn't sorry to see it go because of the gnat problem.

There are various ways to control Fungus Gnats...some use BT (organic mosquito control) when they water potted plants, some let the soil dry out between watering. FG larvae attack the plant's root system. The website below might be of some help.

i have them in my raised beds and they are definitely eating my ripe strawberries AND the leaves of my peas!
