'Mel's Mix for All'

Info below is from the "Square Foot Gardening Newsletter November 2009":

MEL'S MIX FOR ALL

We have some exciting news to tell you. In 2008 we made Mel's Mix by hand in the yard ( I kid you not), used recycled bags, and then sold about 500 bags here in Utah.

For 2009 we went out on a limb and had Mel’s Mix bagged by 2 soil companies. This was sold in several places in Southern California and throughout Utah. This year we sold over 16,000 bags!

We did experience a few setbacks as we learned about how to work with large manufacturers and making sure that the mix was properly put together when we are not physically mixing it ourselves!

Thank you to all of those who purchased our first year's experiment to help us perfect a mix we can be proud of. We have finally worked out the bugs (no pun intended) and for 2010 we expect to sell a quarter of a million bags. We will have it distributed all over America, as well as parts of Canada. Now we need your help!

Please call all your local nurseries and big box stores to make sure they order Mel’s Mix for the spring. Make a list of their names and telephone numbers so you can call back again when it is time to garden. We will give you more information in the next few months as to brand names and locations. We must create a buzz now so they can be aware of this new product and place their orders. Most companies order for spring in December... so act now if you want to have this available to you locally.

Yours Truly,
Mel Bartholomew

Most of the local garden centers already carry Mel's Mix. I got mine from IFA, which is a local feed chain store here in Utah.

Lucky you!

Now there is a chance for the rest of us to purchase Mel's Mix in areas outside Utah and So. Calif too. However, we need to let the nurseries and big box stores know that there is a demand for it.

How about western NY state? Mixing my own was a chore even in smaller batches. It really set my sciatica going.

I agree, purchasing already prepared Mel's Mix can be much easier. From what I understand from the original newsletter, Mel's Mix will be available across the USA and in parts of Canada.

We have to let out local nurseries and big box stores know that there is a demand for it so they can order it.

I just stopped in at 2 local garden centers (Armstrong's) for some misc items and while I was there I asked if they would special order some Mel's mix. On both occasions I was met with blank stares. They had no idea what I was talking about. Both places said this was the first they had ever heard of the stuff. Even worse, looking around a bit it appears all their stuff comes from the same supplier.
