Preparing Beds for Next Year

| This was my first year with a SFG (or garden in general). I had mixed results. Cucumbers, squash and melons did well. Tomatoes, peppers and broccoli hobbled along without much growth.
My guess is that there must be something in the soil that the cucumber family likes. I am using Mel's Mix.
I have two questions ...
1. A lot of the soil in the beds has settled -- as much as 50%. Should I just fill with more compost or more mix?
2. Is there some augmentation that is beneficial to tomatoes and peppers that I can try for next year?
Thanks! |

| 1) I add all 3 ingredients every year 2) EarthTainers (self-watering containers) worked excellent for me. Just google 'EarthTainer' or head over to the Tomato forum on here for the discussion on them. |

| Thanks, bencjedi. The EarthTrainers look interesting. |

| kelly - sorry for your mixed results. Most of us have to resort to using storebought amendments during the first growing season, but also start making homemade compost at the same time, to amend the garden with at the beginning of the second year. Try it, your plants will love it. EG |
