The recent topics on MelÂs mix reminded me of an experience I had with Vermiculite that I think you should be aware of. My daughter was the graphics designer for a company that produced mycorrhizal fungi products. They had a product that was vermiculite impregnated with mycorrhizal fungi and it was nearing its shelf life. I got about four cubic yards for the price of taking. I immediately tilled it into the garden fortunately it was off-season. The second year the vermiculite was evident but did not seam as dense. The third year there was no evidence of it at all. This tells me that if you do not irrigate then when you add compost, you should also add some vermiculite. It would be interesting if some one that has been SFGing for 3 or 4 years would dig to the bottom of the box post the results.
