Really odd growth..?

I've noticed a really strange growth that looks like lentils around a few of my boxes.

Can anyone identify them?

Are they harmful to the plants?

I'm wondering if it's some sort of disease.. Or maybe something that's actually helpful to the plants?

My guess is some sort of fungus, but I have no clue...

Hi, I'm a longtime lurker (more active on the Kitchen Table, Pets Forum and sometimes the Cooking Forum) ... I've seen the fungus in your pic once, a long time ago, in my Gran's garden in India.

Now I MUST know what it is LOL, so I googled 'scaly yellow fungus' and got some info with pictures in the link given below. Scroll down the page for pics and info on different kinds of fungus. I liked the names (Witches' butter, Lemon drops, orange peel :D)

Also, no idea if it's parasitic/harmful in any other way.
