Suggestion for editing preferences

There is so much confusion on the part of new (and some not so new members) who are wanting/trying to trade.

Would it be possible to revise the Form maybe?

Show my email address to" None--Members-All Could there be a note something to this affect?

Suggestion: Choose Members if you plan to be active on the Exchange Boards.

AND

Where it has the box to check and says"Allow other users to send you email via forms at our site.

Could it possibly be added something like If you plan to actively use the Exchange Boards for trading, it is suggested you check this box

There are so many anymore it seems that are unreachable due to not setting the preferences the way they need to be to be reached.

I do realize that there will still be some who will never read it or pay any attention to it...probably in their haste to start trading...as I was.

I agree that we need a revision to help our new members better navigate their member pages.

I think this is a great idea. For some reason the past 6 months have seen a lot of members posting to receive SASBE seeds and have been no way to contact them. Responses asking them to contact you have not been picked up by these members.
Hopefully this will help that problem. Make things more clear to new members.

Your list intrigued me for an odd reason: WHAT catalogue were you getting all that stuff from? A lot of those prices were positively off the wall! (At least two mail-order and several nurseries come to mind where you could get Rosemary 'Arp' for about $6., not $11.) Expense aside, the REAL issue, as many have pointed out, is WHERE are they all going? After just one winter of having to hold over a zillion pots of things I just HAD to have (but never got around to planting), and losing 75% of the batch to a foul winter, I learned my lesson. . .now, a master list accumulates during the current season, only after a definite location for that plant/plants has been determined; then, after much thought and/or second guessing, only plants from the remaining list can be ordered. Yes, I know, that sounds frightfully disciplined for one of us "wild and carefree" gardeners, but the payoff is SO worth it when Springs rolls around and I once again have to deal with reality. . . When will they finally introduce a Plant-Aholic's Anonymous. . .or, is that what all these confessions on GW are all about? Carl

Do you mean there is no "Send me an email" link on their member page? That is caused by a member not checking the box to receive emails via the GW forms. Does this pertain possibly to the post below of mine... Subject of Posting here are SuggestionsSuggestion for editing preferences Sue

Round Robin 2010-2011 Edition

Well, I have received the requested information from nearly everyone so far. It appears we will have 2 groups of Row Robins, and one Round Robin. I expect one will start in September (likely around the 18th?), probably one of the Row groups. There will be one in October (probably the Round group), and one in November (the other Row group). I plan to send each participant an e-mail that will provide each of you the names and order of your group (you will always send TO the same person, and receive FROM the same person). There has been a question about size. If you are planning a Round Robin, my best suggestion is to make your center somewhere in the 12" - 18" range. Any bigger and your quilt will likely end up quite large. Any smaller, and it may be difficult for the first few rounds. If there are any other questions, you all have my e-mail address; feel free to reach me that way and I will make every attempt to get back to you quickly. EDIT: Warm-dim under cabinet LEDs? Can they ever look like halogen?

I would recommend Linear LED undercabinet lighting as long as it has a frosted cover. Otherwise the result could end up looking like a bunch of flashlights under the cabinets. There are fixtures that have adjustable color which can be fun. But as long as Warm White is available, I would be happy. Warm White is generally a safe bet with any type of light. Before LED, Xenon was the best option as it does not have the heat or the gases that Halogen has. LED, when it burns out in less time than expected, is not repairable, but Xenon or Halogen can be repairable with replacement bulbs.

I got replies to my thread, but none of the emails that people indicated they sent or were sending. Another person that I traded with said she hadn't even gotten the notices from GW (though maybe the box wasn't checked). And if you get a notice from someone that doesn't have their addy posted, well, you can't even click reply. you have to go to the site, cross your fingers with the form, and figure they're never going to get it.

This is why it is very important to have our e-addy available for other members to see. And this is very difficult to do, particularly for newbies because...

I just did an interesting test.

I went to my member profile, and unchecked the box that says "Allow other users to send you email via forms at our site"...yet kept it set to "Show my email address to: Members". To see if I could force someone to copy and past my email address instead of using the ineffective form.

Then I went to see what users would see on My Member Page.

Low and behold, there was no "email this member" link at the top (which is what I click on to see their address, ignoring the form of course).

I'm not sure where in this situation GW plans to show my email address to a member....Maybe only when I reply to their post and they've checked the box? Seems it actually means "Show my email to: Members I've replied to only" then?

It's no wonder so many newbies are completly unreachable on the Exchange pages.

GW, this really needs to be sorted out. The suggestions above are super, please highly consider them.
