How to see all new postings since last visit

Many forums have a feature...

"See all new postings since your last visit"

Clicking this shows you any new posting regardless of which "sub-forum" it may have been posted to.

I think this is very helpful as some one who is mostly active in the... say... Propagation Forum may have an answer for someone who posted a question to some other forum.

Plus... many of the "sub-forums" seem like they only experience occasional activity... and maybe this is because the overall GardenWeb forum is so finely sub-divided

So my suggestions are...

1 - Add the feature to "see all new postings since my last visit"

2 - Narrow the number of sub-forums or categories so the activity level in each forum is higher.

(then folks with an interest in a narrow topic can use the search feature to search across sub-forums for their particular interest)

If feature number one is already available and I just missed it... maybe you should make it more obvious so it hits me in the face :-)

Without a click counter one really doesn't know how much activity a forum gets. I've seen cases over at another forum where a title may get a thousand views and no replies, all lurkers.

Determining a "view" vs a new "post" (and/or "response") are different things.

In the case referenced in the original post new "post" (and/or "responses") since the last visit was the topic... not how many 'views' since the last visit...

Basically a new "post" (and/or "response" )are simply new records added to the forum database and each record would have a 'record id' number automatically assigned when the new record was added/created.

So, if there were 100 records in the database (100 post) then that number (100) would be saved in a members profile upon their viewing the forum.

Then next time they came back to the forum the data base application would see that there were now (for example) 125 post in the forum and inform the returning member that there were 25 new post since their last visit and offer them the option to... 'would you like to view them now?'

Easy peasy :-)

Jean, thank you for commenting. We just got an ice and snow storm overnight so it seems like a million years ago that I wandered around that beautiful garden. It was so hot that day, but I would take some of that warmth right now! It was truly a treat to be amidst all those beautiful flowers. I had saved the pictures for sharing in the winter, since I knew they would be appreciated more because we'd all be starving for beauty. Celeste

Thank you all so much! It's nice to get to share with others even though it would get done the same way even if it were only the 5 sets of eyes living in this house who saw it. The family tree tree has been really fun to put together and can't wait until the nieces and nephews get to see it. As far as how long it takes, I would estimate probably a good 4 weeks (not constantly, still have to work and then have 3 kids at home) depending on what needs reworked, re-lit or just added to. I love all of it (with the exception of pulling lights that don't work off pre-lit trees), so I just take my time, tweak and add to until it's time to start taking it all down. It all gets stored next door in the little house we bought a few years ago to control the "rental situations". We also have our office over there so it works out great for me while waiting on customers to fluff and re-light garlands and trees. Electrical tape and paint is a good idea on those cords....that may be my project next year. I've also thought about whipping up some of those fabric cord covers in a solid color to match the walls. It gets ridiculous with the strategic planning of the extension cords and then not really being 100% sure of what is on what breaker. We've been at this house for about 10 yrs now also, and we are now starting "Phase II." It was so bad when we first bought it that are goal was to make it livable and then to go back and really start adding the features we want. By the time we get this darn thing done, we may very well be dead! LOL Again, thank you all so much for your kind comments and I'm so glad you all enjoyed! Alex

westchestermom, he's such a sweetie! sorry - never answered the granite questions... one on the far right - white spring. one in the middle - typhoon bordeaux one on the far left - not sure (they only had numbers) but I think it's something like gold & silver. Ended up not choosing any of them.... The white spring didn't look like the sample - too much pink in it and not enough beige/caramel. The TB had the right colors, and I thought I'd tagged the slab I wanted, but it turns out they only tag from the lot, and the ones that they had when I went back had lots more grey than I wanted, and just didn't make me fall in love. The other one was a ridiculous price. Now I've got a slab of Namibian Gold on hold and I really like it and I'm probably going with that. It was way cheaper than the TB too, which fits my "overbudget" budget.
