WANTED: 'Exchange' section for Butterfly Forum
Comments (25)We went through this back when iVillage first took over GW and the one thing I recall was that we were told to post the request on the Suggestions and Comments forum with a note on this forum directing members there. We obviously did not get the exchange but maybe this is better timing. For heavens sake if there is demand for a forum for Lucky Bamboo surely they can spare a page or two for a nice busy forum like this one!! You certainly get my yes vote!! spiderwoman...See MoreButterfly Gardening article on front page of H&G section
Comments (16)Seedmama - welcome, welcome, welcome! We really need more people from Oklahoma "entertaining" the butterflies with hosts and nectar plants and I'm glad to hear you are helping their cause. There are a lot of people on the Oklahoma Forum, too, that are interested in providing habitat for the butterflies, but not all of them post here. I encourage you to check out the Monarch Watch website as well. I am a Monarch Waystation, as is Linda and Sandy, and I live close to downtown in the older area of Oklahoma City. I "grow" lots of butterflies and sphinx moths, too, since I have a lot of their food plants that were planted here many moons ago (like Elm, Hackberry, Virginia Creeper, etc.). Some of the most common trees, shrubs, and forbs are host to a myriad of butterflies and moths. I winter sow a lot of my butterfly plants. Gives me something to do in the winter when its cold, wet, snowy, or icy. My seeds didn't do as well this winter (2006-2007) as they did last winter (2005-2006) for some reason. And, I'm finding that a lot of the native plants seem to do best just direct sown on the ground. I think they don't like all that rich potting soil, but prefer the lean soil they grow in naturally. Sorry to get off track here. Linda, as I said last night - your article was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed it. While they didn't mention Monarch Waystations, they at least provided a link to Monarch Watch which, hopefully, some will check out. I have to say (altho sometimes I get frustrated, disappointed, and tired), that butterfly gardening has given me much more joy than not. Comments (166)Hi Signet, I've potted up an alcea rugosa (?) butter yellow hollyhock with fig leaves for you. My downy wood mint seems to have disappeared too. I'm half way through potting things up :-p I've been potting up other stuff for my plant sale the following week. Thank goodness for my new potting bench that Matt finished on Saturday!! Now I can do 30 pots in the time it used to take to do 10 _and_ still be able to stand up straight! Thankfully the next half of the potting up is the easy stuff. The 17 small plants from cuttings which won't take long once I get my kitchen back. Looks like it won't be so crazy hot tomorrow, and even a bit cloudy, so I can send the houseplants outside for their summer vacations! Because of the fear of lily beetles, I'll just bag the lilies the day before the swap with no dirt attached. I had hoped to get the cannas and dahlias planted this weekend, but it was too hot, and the weeds in that section of the front yard have gone nuts. WMC1 & NavyGirl01 - is their anything on my list that you would trade for a green or a non pink echinacea? I just found a Stokes blue aster as I was weeding & digging up the Yellow toadflax for Lilac....See MoreGarden Exchange Forum
Comments (6)I vote for a link to be listed on the Plant and Seed Exchanges and other exchanges to help alert people. An announcement on other exchange forums might be nice too. Only a handful of us seem to know the Garden Exchange is there so we can trade non-plant items. If we can't liven up the Garden Exchange forum, I'd like to see the garden exchange forum merged with the plant and seed exchanges. Both those forums are not as busy as they used to be sadly....See MoreMichelle Reynolds
