Before I joined my garden club ordered bulbs in bulk for sharing. I hope we can do it again and also share seeds. We visit local ecological vegetable farms, public gardens and parks with special features, our own gardens and local private gardens of some fame. We organize a country walk in spring to a beauty spot where one of us has made a fire for a barbecue in advance. Last year we had a talk by a remarkable woman farmer who grows several old varieties of grains like spelt and visited her farm in summer to buy flour and taste and buy her bread. We arrange plant fairs on a small scale twice a year and sell our surplus plants and produce. This fall we will have a pelargonium competition. Each contestant starts with a cutting of the same size and the same variety (Wilhelm Langguth) supplied by a member who is a collector. Next week we will visit a local nursery after hours where we get reduced prices when we come as group. The owner gives a short talk about novelties and any plants of distinction. Hey glo2001 just drop me an e-mail at (hladdengast@yahoo.com) I atually do get most of them localy, athough I order anually from Coenosium. There's a few great nurseries in the area. Most 'specialty' conifers in this are all come from Iseli. I know all the garden center people and will request certain plants. I just picked up a whole tray of fancifull gardens plants from a nursery in Spirit Lake. Spencer Ia. has a good nursery as does Spirit Lake Ia. But by far the best area nursery is in Aurora S.D. owned by Norm Evers. He's developed a few of the plants offered by Iseli. Mostly thuja occidentalis, 'Rushmore' and 'Norm Evers', and pinus mugo Tannenbaum', definately worth the trip. Norm is a great guy a wealth of knowledge. Of the ones you list (potentilla, lambs ears, daylily, iris, chives, lady's mantle, coral bells, ivy, pachysandra, hosta, trillium, forsythia, hydrangea, sedums, phlox, clematis), only the following might be questionable, or need some special consideration: - ivy, pachysandra, trillium, forsythia, hydrangea, clematis The trillium likely needs woodland conditions, so you may have to create that setting in your new location, depending on your situation. For the shrubs, it would be useful to look up the particular species and cultivar to help judge hardiness...same for the clematis. The other perennials you list are generally very hardy types, and should likely be hardy there.
