vanderwolf pine turning brown

Hi, this is my second attempt to have these beautiful trees in my yard. I am in Alb,NM and the first time I planted 3 trees and they did well for the first couple of months and then turned brown and dry. We pulled them out. At first I thought they were not getting enough water and then maybe I was over watering? So second attempt I bought much larger trees of the same kind and planted them in different parts of the yard. I thought since they were so big already that they would do better. So far through the summer they looked beautiful. And now they are doing the same thing as the others. They are turning brown and I'm not sure if they are being affected by an insect or what? They are turning brown pretty rapidly. I have several small birds that come in the yard and it looks as though they are eating the buds of the ends of the branch completely would that kill the tree? Or more likely to be an insect? Help any suggestions I really want to save these trees!!! Thanks
