Could you please add a Discussion Forum to the Square Foot Gardening Forum.

Several wish to chat OT but these messages are pushing other gardening related topics off the first page quicker than normal.

I agree, that an (off topic) Conversation side to the forum is greatly wanted and needed. There is a real sense of community on the forum, and members need a place to discuss and share things that are not specifically SFG related.

I feel the same way. We have a very close knit group of people in the sfg forum, and need a "conversation" side to it. Moderators - would you please consider this?

Watering with Soaker Hose?

I use lots of timer soaker hose set-ups in both flower and vegetable beds and 15 minutes isn't nearly long enough - their purpose is to deliver water very slowly so in 15 minutes you are giving them minimal water. And as already mentioned, daily watering is a very bad idea for inground plants for many reasons - sometimes necessary for containers but not in-ground plants. The easiest way I know to determine how long you need to run is to take a tin can - tuna or cat food can works great - bury it in the soil almost up to the rim, drape the hose across it and note the time required to fill the can. The depth of the water in the can will tell you approximately how many inches of water you have delivered to the plants. In my case, in the tomato beds, it takes right at 2 hours to deliver the 1 1/2" of water they need weekly. But that will vary depending on the type and size of soaker hose you use. Since, depending on the weather and type of soil, most plants need only 1-2" of water a week to thrive a once weekly 2-3 hour watering is all you would need in most cases. Maybe a 2x weekly in extremely hot weather but heavy mulch can cut that need down too. And since you would be using the hose and timer only 1-2 x a week, then no, you wouldn't want to leave the water on and the timer engaged. ;) Just set it on watering day, let the timer turn it off when done, and then turn off the faucet later that day. Pressure-treated wood used for home and playground construction projects, no longer contain Chromated Copper Arsenic(CCA). It was phased out in the 1990's, not due primarily to concerns about the Arsenic leaching into the soil and contaminating it and water supplies, but due to the level of Arsenic present on the surface of the wood that people(especially children) and animals come in contact with. Here's a link that discusses the subject of using CCA treated wood in gardens. The Pessure-treatment used today is; Alkaline Copper Quaternary(ACQ) and to date, no health concerns have been raised due to contact with the treated wood. It's available in 2 grades, one for above ground use(0.25), one for ground contact use(0.40). The label attached to each piece will specify level of treatment & recommended usage. The heart-wood of trees is more resistant to decay than the outer surface and you should look for that when selecting lumber. They are the pieces that contain no knots. Usually graded as #1 and not available at Home Improvement Centers, who carry #2(they say!) but is more like #3 or #4, of my long-ago construction days!(some I've seen, had so many large knots, they just missed being culls, by having all square edges)! By checking through all of the bundles, you can sometimes find some with a few small or no knots. On my last framing experience, I had to visit 2 HD's and a Lowes and go through every bundle in stock, to find 16 - 2"X10"X12', that I felt were suitable for floor joists. An all day ordeal, that I hope to never repeat! Good luck with your project! FWIW, all soils and the water you drink, contain Arsenic, but at very low, (deemed)acceptable levels. Root vegetables, such as carrots, beets, potatoes, turnips, etc., contain a much higher level than the mature above-ground ones. It could be some form of slime mold, but there is something else it could be too. Did you fill this planter with purchased potted plants? I sometimes use the water retention gel crystals, and also get shipments of certain plants where the supplier has used them. They aren't noticeable when the plant is on the dry side, and usually that means they're hidden in the root ball. But..........when the plant get hydrated from rains, they swell up with moisture and it looks like somebody cut up transparent jello and mixed it with the soil. Feels icky to the touch too. But, is quite effective in keeping potted plants alive between infrequent waterings. I don't know if any retail soil mixes have them or not, could be.

ok, i'd like to third this since my other one was not posted.
:'( i'd love it if you'd consider this for us, we newbies to this method have so much to learn from the older ones, and i hate the idea that people like me have run off the old timers on this forum with our chatty talk, that is why i think that this conversation side is so very important. then we can have our chatty side while the others can have the important side, and when we have something important to add or learn we can go over there and add to that. of course, i did mention all of this in my email to you last week. i really do hope that you do consider this. it would be a great thing for this particular forum!!
