Use of Epsom Salts in already salty alkaline soils?

| A lot of books recommend supplementing your lawn and garden with epsom salts. Can anyone tell me whether or not they are helpful or harmful in soils that are already salty and alkaline (like here in the Southwest).
Also, what exactly do Epsom salts do?
Thanks for any help, I've already tried researching it myself and didn't have much luck. |

| Epsom salts copntain magnesium salts, something in low amounts in our S'Western alkaline soil. Magnesium is an important trace mineral for growth of plants. Epsom salts are an inexpensive rapid Mg replacement. |

| Hello, I use Epsom salts a couple of times a year for plants, particularly roses, and lawn. I am of the opinion that they are a good old-fashioned tonic, if you will. Lorna |

| I sprinkle epsom salts around my roses every fall and grow like crazy when the weather begins to warm. The soil in my area is clay and very alkaline! |

| Great info. Can anyone recommend the proper mix of epsom salts and water, especially if one were planning to put it on palm trees in pots? Thanks. |
