Agave ovatifolia

I was looking through my copy of Agaves, Yuccas, and Related Plants (Irish) and they didn't even have Whale's Tongue Agave. What's up with that??? I'm going to pick a pup up tomorrow from a friend and thought I'd look it up. Has the name changed since 2000 when this book was published?

The Irish book is good but it does omit a lot of species. I think the author makes some mention of this in the preface, explaining that some species were left out for various reasons such as availability, hardiness, etc. And when you take into account how many agave species exist, it would be difficult to include them all, especially since the book also includes plants from the nolinaceae and other genera from the agavaceae.

Since I posted that, I was told by the person who gave me one that they weren't identified (named?) until after 2000 so they couldn't have made it into the book. It seems to be very popular now so I thought it would have been included. Oh well.

Just discovered them myself last Fall. Now that frost danger is about over in Southern NM, I am going to plant the one I bought mail order.
