I used to live in NC, but have now moved to Las Cruces, NM.

I would appreciate any recommendations on planting.

Thanks.

Welcome to Las Cruces, Alice! Depends upon what you like. Everything from beautiful Chihuahuan desert natives, which are easy on the water supply, to many things you could grow in the Carolinas. There are several varieties of cold hardy palms (which don't burn like the Mexican palms you see around town), yet we have enough cold nights to produce abundant fruit here. The University of Texas, El Paso, has a huge native plant sale during the last week of April. Sierra Vista Nursery in La Union near the TX border on Highway 28 is also very nice, and their employees very knowledgeable. Good luck, dl
