Seeking Low - Mod Water Plants With Tropical Look

Posted by millerthyme Southern California (My Page) on

Hi All! I'm seeking to find low or moderate water use plants, that have a tropical or somewhat tropical look. Area has both sunny and somewhat shady spots. I'm in the Los Angeles area of California. These plants will be installed in the front area of my friend's new day spa, so it will be high visibility and can serve as an example for the surrounding area. Much fun! Any ideas?

Thanks much!

some I like are:
Blue Hibiscus: (Alyogyne huegelii)Low water & Sun
Tecoma x 'Sunrise' (I bought this at a Home show. It came from Garrison Foothills Nursery) Low Water, Full Sun
Kaffir Lily: (no offense intended..it is its name)shade and drought Tolerant
Zephyr Lily: Sun & Arid
Cape Plumbago: Sun or Shade
Desert Bird of Paradise or Mex. Bird of Paradise
Cape Mallow
Salvias
Grasses & Daylillies are good fillers
Bush Anomone
Strawberry Tree
Tree Dahlia
Tree Mallow
Pineapple Guava: Low Water & Sun
Western Redbud: Low water and Sun
Lady Banks Rose: (a climber)Full Sun, Low Water
Carolina Jessamine: Mine is in full sun a uses low water..Lots of Beautiful Yellow Flowers

Also if you mulch heavily it will save on water loss.

There are alot more..some I have tried, Some I am going to try.

I am having to move alot of what I prev. chose because I didn't have a good plan..I just bought what I liked.

Now I am really looking at the location and imagining the colors and shapes, before I buy. I am stuck with a few plants that are the wrong colors in the locations I have them and I am not sure where to put them!

etc...

A good place to see pictures and info is www.bewaterwise.com Go to the Garden Spot

You may even want to check with your water district because they may offer rebates.

Also the County or City Website may offer good suggestions on what to plant.

As it is a Day Spa, you may want to look at Rosemary, Lavenders or other plants that have scents and herbal uses. Kind of goes with the theme. Also Scented Geraniums are pretty Hardy.. Some like more sun then others,

Also many plants for Birds & Butterflys have a tropical look. Butterfly Bush, Salvias, Penestemons, Lantanas.. Garden Web has lists for both Butterfly & Hummingbird gardens.

The Coral vine - Antigonon leptopus has great flowers and gets by on little water.

My all time favorite plant is dyssodia - or Thymophylla pentachaeta. It will grow and bloom all year long with no supplemental water even here in Las Vegas.
