help with companion container plants

I just bought a positively huge glazed pot for my front porch. Only $30 so I may get another. I wanted something tree-like with most of the year interest for it. I ended up ordering 2 plants. One is a dwarf black pussy willow (salix gracilistyla "melanostachys") and the other for another pot is a black choke cherry (Aronia melanocarpa "Viking").

Both these plants will start out teeny tiny in a huge pot so I'd like something to plant around them that won't compete. Maybe herbs? The porch is west-facing and covered so sun just in the afternoon (might not be enough for the willow). The willow pot will be kept moist. The chokecherry will have a sandier, faster draining soil.

Anyone have a suggestion as to what I might try? Plants won't be here until late-April so I have some time.
