 o
Oleander or Hopbush for screen

Posted by jhaz 9 (My Page) on

Hello,

I am considering either of these 2 to provide a screen near the pool area and to block out views of the yard next door.

I've seen some good & bad about Oleanders but not too much on hopbush. Are Oleanders the best thing to use or could Hopbush provide the same attributes?

Thanks

Major differences: All parts of Oleander are poisonous and hopbush is a SW native plant. Similar drought tolerance and rate of growth. Both make an attractive hedge, with oleander obviously having more color interest.

Arizona rosewood is another option. Very similar looking to oleander. Slow growing at first I hear but good growth rate thereafter in cultivation.

I agree with above. AZ Rosewood looks similar to oleander. Mine grew slowly first couple seasons but rapidly thereafter.

Oleanders DO NOT like winter winds regardless how much water you give them.
