 o
last frost date?

I was looking at a table of last frost dates and saw Albuquerque's as May 25. Does that sound right to you more experienced Southwesterners? That seems awfully late, even though I recognize historically there's been snow as late as May. Does this mean to be safe I shouldn't put out tomatoes and eggplant and the other hot weather plants until then?

Go to 'intellicast.com' which is a weather site, enter your zip code and scroll down about half way (below a line graph) and click 'historical data.' Two screens will appear: 1) yearly summery and 2) current months daily data. You change the month by clicking on the month in upper right corner of this screen. This the best data I have found.

Planting early is not a big problem if you are willing to follow the daily weather and be prepared to cover the plants when night temps. get below about 38 degrees.

Check out 'intellicast.com' because the average night temp. of 17 April is about 40. Can you have a freeze then, sure but that is true for a date in the spring (March 20 to June 20) but less likely as spring wares on.

Everything in Albuquerque depends on altitude, and the range is huge in this city. The May 25 date may not be so far off when it comes to colder valley pockets, while April 17 is about right on average and even earlier in favored areas around the university and heights.

Don't know where you live in Albuquerque but I live in the close-in NE Heights zone 7 & exactly 5200 ft. elevation. For some strange reason my little area often has temps. (cold) more like the Valley. I saw where the latest last freeze in Spring in Albuquerque was May 27, 1917-18 & earliest last freeze in Spring was March 15, 2001. We start our seed under grow lights in Feb. & transplanted them to the garden this year the first week in May or so. I know a late freeze of ? 29 degrees (forgot to record the date!) this year got all our cherry, peach, plums, apricots & most of the apples this spring.

I live in the Barelas community, a few blocks south of Coal. I too lost my fruit on the quince, cherry. apricot and pear trees. The blossoms sure were beautiful while they lasted. The plums held on, Thank God, so we'll have some fruit there. I had 3 figs that made it, and lately some little figs have come out. It's now June 4th and the tomatoes that I put in at the end of April have fruit on them. The peppers and eggplants are growing more slowly since we had slightly cooler temperatures for awhile. THey should take off when the inevitable heat comes.
