what to plant in brick planter attached to house

Hello,

Please let me know if this is not the right forum for this question.

I have a 1955 brick planter attached to the house (under roof) that gets afternoon & evening sun. Its about 3.5 ft tall and 3 ft wide, 5 feet long. I think it gets really hot in there.

Its not sealed or anything, and I have potting soil in it now. I am assuming I need to be cautious of watering it, as its attached to the house, right? How often a week would you water something in it? I was thinking once a week.

So I would like something pretty,a vine to flow over (potatoe vine?), annuals & prennials to spice it up...any ideas? I tried tulips, and they started coming up early, and then died when they were about 4 inches tall, now I have dead tulips that never bloomed. As a side question, do you think I should let these sit in there until fall and try to move them? Or since they did not get a chance to fully grow and bloom they won't store enough energy to use again?

Sorry so long! FYI- I am in the Denver, CO area.

Thanks
