I have one and here in NM am trying to duplicate your Ca. conditions.Have it outside now and added alittle manure and hope to keep it moist over the summer so it will bloom

I do have 3 sets of Birds of Paradise in front of my house in AZ. They were already there when I bought the house last fall. They don't seem to be doing well now. Not sure what to do. Any advice ?

I have a BOP here in Albuquerque in full sun and morning shade,I planted it about 4 months ago and it has almost doubled in size and bloomed.We'll just have to see how winter treats it, there are several around the city in landscape.

I've struggled growing a bird of paradise on the north side of my Las Vegas home. Between the heat of the summer and cool of the winter, it's been really tough...I think I killed one from root rot...I had to take it off my drip system. I do see large birds of paradise in pockets around Vegas that do very well... Vegas soils are often times very alkaline and do not leach salts easily:(

Since my last posting, I've moved to a bigger yard and have once again experimented with BOP's. This time I planted on an east facing block wall with afternoon shade. Between the block wall and palm trees around them, they have doubled in size and have been blooming. It is possible to grow these in Las Vegas. This is year 3 that they have been in the ground in the Providence area of Las Vegas.

They grow fine in full sun in Northern CA. The trick is they don't like a lot of water, once established. Gives them rot, as aquadm discovered.

My neighbor's house in front is completely surrounded by mature, massive BOP clumps - literally each one is about 8' across. In the 21 yrs we've lived here she has never, ever watered them (or any of her yard) during the entire summer.
