Birds of paradise in Zone 9

Hi, everyone! I live in Lucerne Valley, California, also known as the High Desert or Victor Valley. I'm at 3500 feet elevation. Hot summers, cold winters and fierce winds.

I love Birds of Paradise. I've done a little research and know they are a tropical plant. Not exactly describing my land here (10 acres). They also require a shady area for the most part. One side of my house stays shady most of the time due to cottonwood trees, which I water constantly. Do you think I have a shot with Birds of Paradise in this area of the yard? I know people grow Birds of Paradise in the OC and LA areas, but I haven't seen any here yet. Maybe I need to plant them in containers due to our rocky soil?

Any positive track records out there?

Thanks!
