My bananas have seeds!

Because of the cold mornings, the fruit is not ripe yet. The small bananas seem to have survived the many days of frost. Danger of frost MAY be over now. I will be waiting to see if the fruit will start growing again and ripen. I am anxious to know if any seeds are viable. I was given a small unidentified pup, which has grown to a large clump. It seems to be a Musa Balbisiana, a seeded wild banana.

RE: My bananas have seeds!

Greetings! I'm new to Phoenix and am very interested in attempting to grow a drawf banana tree. It could be in a container or in the ground (though given the hardness of the soil in my back yard, I think a container would be the better decision to make). Can you give me information about banana tree varieties that would do well in AZ?

RE: My bananas have seeds!

Hi Krum
Welcome to Phoenix!
I have not grown dwarf bananas. I do have some seeds from Musa Velutina that I traded for and hope they will do well here. They are a small dwarf with pink bananas.
I think any banana can do very well here and will do much better in the ground.
If you want edible friut, stay away from the seeded varieties. Banana plants LOVE compost and LOTS of water. They have shallow spreading roots that do not cause any damage.
FYI - Banana plants are addictive!
Good luck and
Happy gardening.
