converting non-native grass lawn to meadow in ABQ

Hello - I live in Albuquerque and it was suggested to me that an easy thing to make my yard unique would be to plant a mixture of buffalo grass and wildflower seeds. One person told me I need to kill the exsisting grass (looks dead already) with Finale or another weed killer before rototilling andseeding, and the guy at the nursery said that killing the grass was unessecary. He said to rototill the lawn, rake of the excess, mix in back to earth with the exsiting soil and then spread the seeds. He said that the buffalo and wildflowers will sprout first and being taller than burmuda etc., would obsucure any non-native grass that returns and eventually choke it out. Any input? I would like to the whole yard to be buffalo and flowers. Is this as easy as they suggest? My plan would be to seed with an over abundnace to ensure enough survives birds, wind and floating away during watering.\

Thanks for your help.
