What to plant under coneflower

Posted by Sonorazona Z8bAZ-Tucson (My Page) on

I would like to plant a groundcover under my coneflowers. Does anyone have a suggestion for a compatible plant. I'm looking for something that is xeric and will tolerate being walked on once or twice a week.

Thanks

Also, try Ice Plant and Baby Sun Rose.

Hmmm - my coneflowers get so thick I can't under plant them. In a walking area I would try the creeping thymes or roman chamomile. For very low/no trafic areas possibly horehound, alyssum, forget-me-nots, sedums, or creeping rosemary too (?).

I tend to mix other tall or vining plants with my coneflowers; coreopsis, cosmos, morning glory/moon flower, annual poppies, and passion flowers.

Purple verbena - although it, like much of the others won't care too much for foot traffic.... maybe you could put some stepping stones down?

Ditto on suggesting the stones. There's not too much here that can take both the heat and the walking.
