Invasive roots or not a tree needs to grow on the bottom as big as it grows on the top . Builders and pool companies today in the southwest continue to make properties smaller and pools bigger leaving very little room for landscaping ... even palms in time can grow root systems capable of busting out of planter boxes that are so commonly intergrated into pool designs.

Provide as much room as you can ... there really is no simple answer. Maybe you will sell the house before it becomes a problem ??

Check the Sunset garden book for a list of trees that are reasonable around pools.

Thank you so much for your help. We decided to go back to MV where we purchased and swap it out for a Queen Palm, and we'll be moving it a few feet further to keep it away from the pipes since the roots are shallow. They actually didn't give us much trouble and didn't charge us for the delivery fee. Oh, we had a landscaper out on Sun and he made a comment about moving the tree and we didn't even say anything to him about our dilema. Better to be safe than sorry. Thanks!
