Anyone know if a mexican elder will grow near Chicago? Love these trees, but i don't want to kill one to experiment.

I agree, nice looking trees. Look kind of bonzai. There zone limit is 7. I know here in new mexico I've never seen them north of albuquerque.

I guess I'm not the only one who has been admiring this species.

Zone 7 sounds accurate, but don't despair, as there seem to be other black-fruited elders with a similar growth form and look (and larger berries, if you're into harvesting them). I would not venture a guess as to their exact identification, but there is much taxanomic confusion in the elderberry world, and quite a bit of variability it seems. Maybe care and pruning can give you something similar to the look of Mexican elder with a more northern species?
