Unusual Flower

Hello, I have this very unusual flower growing in my yard. I suspect it's a wild flower and have been trying to find out what it is. The leaves are very long, dark green and slender. The flour is orange and has a very distinct black cross running through the middle of the 4 flower petals. I'd post a photo but not sure how to do that and I don't have a website at the moment. Does my description sound familiar to anyone out there?
thanks to all who respond

| Sounds a lot like a gazania, but a picture would be worth a 1000 words. |

Thanks to all who offered their suggestions. We discovered that the flower was indeed a poppy. It was so unusual looking, I wish i could have shown a picture on here but don't know how to do that. Joey |

| Are you sure it's a poppy? The leaves sound wrong. There is a wild flower in the southwest called Calochortus or Mariposa Lily. A good way to check is to look in a wildflower book. |
