Cucumbers and shade?

Posted by frdnicholas Albuquerque NM (My Page) on

Someone suggested I ask this question here. I would like to grow corn in my remaining bed. If I start the corn first, can I let Armenian cucumbers climb the sweet corn stalk? Do the cucumbers need shade, and if so, should I orient the rows east and west, or north-south? Or, could the cucumbers travel on the ground under the corn? What would be the best way to do this if it's workable at all? Thanks

I've never grown cuke's in shade before, I'd think they like sun (?). I've had good success before planting cukes on a small chain-link or wire fence which they climb. They'd probably climb tomato cages as well.

As for the corn, I've usually seen it planted in N-S rows, I know that's how my old farmer Dad plants it in his garden.

I will plant the cucumbers in a different spot, then. Thank you. I just bought Armenian cucumber seeds over Ebay. I couldn't find them anywhere here in Albuquerque. Got a good deal also.

I tried Armenian cukes this year. They are in a large pot going up a trellis in the sun. Lots of flowers but when do the cukes come thanks

I asked the same question awhile back, and the answer was: be patient. Well that has come true. They are coming, slowly, but they're coming. They are growing very big! Most of them are reaching 12 inches or more, and they still taste tender. They are somewhat between a cucumber and a squash in flavor. The first round of flowers are the males, and then come the females from which the fruit comes.
