1.) Acacia, mesquite or palo verde
2.) Columnar cacti (saguaro, trichocereus, etc.)
3.) Eucalyptus
4.) Palms
5.) Fig
From past posts, I know there are a few people growing palms, and I've seen at least two fig trees growing in the ABQ area. I have all of the above, but since I rent, everything is potted. Someday when I own my own home, I'm planning on trying some of these plants outdoors, especially Trachycarpus fortunei. Cheers. |

| Hello Cactus Dude: We have just started growing figs. We lost one, the Celeste, but the Kadota and Texas Everbearing have survived. I think our Celeste was too exposed to the elements and couldn't handle the extremes. We did bring it back to the Alameda Nursery and they replaced it. We put it in a different spot and are hoping for the best. So if you do grow figs, make sure they are somewhat sheltered. We also note that the Kadota and Texas Everbearing died right down to the ground. In the spring we removed the dead wood. We aren't sure if this will have to be done every year. Next spring will tell the tale since this is only their second year. Hope this helps. |
