Swamp cooler pads for the garden?

| I just changed my swamp cooler pads, which were the "natural" kind. My friend told me that I needed to scrape off the calcium. Then I began to think, (I know, that can be dangerous)If this pad is made of natural fibers with calcium and other minerals on it, could it go into the garden cut up as mulch? Has anyone done this, or know something about these pads that would make it a bad idea? I would be grateful for help on this one. |

| I don't know that I'd put them directly into the garden as mulch, but they might decompose in the compost pile, adding their minerals to the compost (?). But I've usually just thrown them out - those deposits are pretty concentrated and I'm not sure what effect that would have on the plants. |
