Non-reddish Salvia greggii in ABQ area?

Greetings,

I have only seen reddish (red, coral, orange/red etc) Salvia greggii around here so far. Not surprising, since I know how vigorous they are, but at least I thought I would have seen one white one by now. Or some of the definitely less vigorous blue or purple shades. Has anyone seen or grown any of these?

Thanks.
John R.

RE: Non-reddish Salvia greggii in ABQ area?

I'm growing a Salvia microphylla that I got from PlantDelights.com, which they describe as follows:

"Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips' (Hot Lips Sage)
Sun, Zone: 7-9a, at least 30" tall Origin: Mexico.
Outrageously cool! This wild selection of the Mexican Salvia microphylla was introduced by Richard Turner of CA after the plant was shared with him by his maid, who brought it from her home in Mexico. The fast-growing, 6' wide x 30" tall clump is adorned with stunning bicolor flowers...red tip and white lip. When the nights warm in summer, the new flowers are all red with an occasional solid white one. As fall approaches, the flowers again will be bicolor red and white."

For me it's been like a tender Greggi. I'm in zone 6a and it's died back almost to the ground both winters I've had it, so it only gets to about 3' wide, but otherwise it performs as advertised. I notice this source also has some of the other colored Greggi like you mentioned.

Poliomintha maderensis looks alot like salvia greggi and at least as drought tolerant. It has white/purple flowers. I hear it grows well here in albuquerque. Native to chihuahua mexico. You might find it at plants of the southwest or bernardo beach or somewhere like that.

Here is a link that might be useful: poliomintha maderensis

That is great that you are growing "Hot Lips" here. This is an incredibly interesting plant; I brought one with me and it is doing fine. After a nice multi-colored flower show in the early spring, it has been blooming solid red lately. Has yours also? (Just for the record, it is officially a S. microphylla, but they cross breed so much with S. greggii they are hard to tell apart.)

Regarding Poliomintha maderensis, is it the same plant that is known as Mexican oregano, or is that another species? I grow it in Austin and it is does extremely well there.
