When to plant potatoes?

I'm thinking about planting potatoes for the first time. I live in downtown Albuquerque. When should I plant them? Could I do a planting for the fall? How well do they do in our heat for the summer? Where are some good sources of seed potatoes? Thanks.

RE: When to plant potatoes?

I would go for it. Although most sources say to plant "as soon as the soil can be worked in spring", potatoes are really a warm season crop, and they don't take too long to mature. The shorter days and cooler nights of late summer and fall should get them to produce as long as you've kept the plants healthy all summer.

Finding seed potatoes this late may be tough -- I would just plant some from the store that look ready to sprout.
