cenizo question (picture)

| I've got this big old cenizo in my yard...very difficult to mow under. I'd like to kill the grass under it, joining the area with the bed that you can see in the background.
Do you think I'll harm the cenizo doing this lasagna-style? I don't intend to build a lot of layers since I won't be planting under the shrub, just some newspaper to smother the grass and composted, shredded wood mulch to cover it all. I'd hate to kill it. It's pretty spectacular when it blooms.

| No, I don't think you'll harm it. As long as the sun hits the leaves, it should be fine. |
