Hey peeps, I am looking to plant some Aspen on my property. Their recomended zone is 7. I am located in the High Desert of Southern California. My zone is 8, elevation is 4,200 ft and we get lots of snow. Temperatures barley reach the 100's and winters get as low as 17 degrees. What do you peeps think? Anyone successfully planted aspen in Southern California?

The short answer is "no". If you want the white-barked look, check out some of the cold-hardy eucalyptus with white barks.

Thanks. But we had Eucalyptus trees last year and they were healthy all season long until winter arrived. They burned severely from the cold and snow. I think I am going to try some of the Birch species.

Don't give up! There is a cultivar called 'Prairie Gold' that may have heat tolerance - some Nebraska nurseries seem to cary it but I can't find it online for sale. I have seen aspen growing in the Upper Sonoran zone in NM among yucca and cacti in riparian areas. These areas see heat even though the cactus intermingles with ponderosa-pinon-fir forest. This is in Waterfall Canyon in the Sandia Mtns. in NM. Contact Plans of the SW in NM. They may be able to ship some heat-tolerant New Mexican clones. Good luck. Aspens are nice if you can swing it!
