When to plant Yellow Bird of Paradise saplings in ground

My two Yellow Bird of Paradise saplings that I started from seeds during the spring are doing well in pots right now. We don't know, however, when they ought to be planted in the ground. I'm *guessing* that during the coming fall would be OK, as it is my understanding that is when plant root growth mostly occurs. Does anyone know when to plant them in the ground, and also if these young saplings would be hardy enough then to make it over this coming winter? Or should we keep them indoors over this winter and plant them outdoors next spring? Thanks for any advice.
