kim 2007-where in NM are you located,I have seen many Bird of Paradise plants around here in Albuquerque,I planted a 5 gallon pot last month I got at Wal-Mart on I-40 for $16 dollars.They also have the 1 gallons for $5 dollars.

We're in Las Vegas. I have only seen 1 YBOP growing in a yard here in town, and I really don't know why they aren't more common up here. Mine are doing great in the flower pots, but we'd like to get them in the ground before winter if at all possible.
How are yours doing after being planted in the ground?

kim 2007-mine is doing good,It hasnt flowered yet,Im not sure how long it takes, but the ones around town all have flowers,maybe cause I planted it only a month ago.The label says they are hardy to 20 degrees,but Im sure it can take more than that.

Kim 2007, I'd plant it now to get the roots established before Fall in your locale. Choose a sheltered South or West exposure. Your plant may get winter die-back, but should at least come back vigorously from the roots in Spring.

I wouldn't worry about them not making it. These plants are super tough. They have naturalized in the desert southwest (native to uruguay) if that's any indicator.
