Infestation of Large Cottonwood Tree

Posted by Danr123 New Mexico (My Page) on

We just bought a house with several mature cottonwood trees. We noticed on a large upper branch of one of the trees there is evidence of some significant infestation (shavings) and when I probed the affected area it was soft and mushy. Does anyone have knowledge or experience about what this may be? If so, I am interested in what type of treatment would be effective. These trees are huge, so I believe identifying or spraying all the affected areas would be impossible. I was wondering if a systemic treatment would be effective and if anybody has a recommendation.
