what be this hea' plant?

i snapped this picture of a plant we saw everywhere in Utah, around the mirror lake area. anyone know what it is? or if it'll grow in my zone over here in Maryland?
i guess if someone can tell me what it is, i can look that up myself ;)

| Veratrum, corn lily. I'd betcha Maryland is too hot for it, but I don't know. Patrick Alexander |
