Does anyone have experience growing Oxblood Lily (Rhodophiala bifida) in NM? I think all of the Amarylids are beautiful, and am trying to find any that would grow, successfully, in Las Cruces. ....Any ideas?

I've got blooms on mine in Tucson today. They are in filtered shade and get occasional water only. They should do fine in NM too.

randiT - just moved to Las Cruces. STUNNED to see bright Red "rain lily" under mulberry tree. Absolutely breathtaking. Just learned it is an "oxblood lily". I was water heavly _ because I have some trees in pots under the mulberry tree (till I find a spot to put them)....when One ox bloood lily bloomed. More seem to be coming up. So, the answer is - YES. Ox blood lilies grow in Las Cruces. Problem is - don't know if they want shade, partial shade, or full sun. Anyone know?? Please, do tell....

I can't speak for New Mexico but in Central Texas they like a little of both, sun and shade. More sun than shade. I find that they can go without hardly any water till August and then I give them a good soaking if none comes to shake them out of their summer dormancy for their september bloom. We have been having 13' of rain per year lately and they bloomed for me last year on one good watering. School house lilly is another name because they bloom when it was traditional to go back to school. One sees them around old abandoned homesteads here so they can take it. They might not bloom if it is too dry but they will come back when the weather gets better.

They are called 'rain lily' because they bloom during our rainy season, July - Sept. The more water you give them the sooner they will bloom. Morning sun is best.
