Unknown Insect (PIC) on Tomato Stems

See attached pic.

It's an insect and groups of them on the stems of my tomato plants. There are hundreds.

So what is it and do I need to try and get rid of them?

It's the desert here so not too many common garden bugs. I have no clue what these are.

Any advice appreciated.

Odd. Looks like a woodlouse with a case of fungus.

Try washing them off with plain water and a hose.

It's not an aphid.

Mealybug, maybe?

Nope it isn't aphid. It's much much worse ...it's mealybug. You can count your plant as good as dead if you don't treat right now. Go out and get some insecticide ...read label if it includes mealybug. If it does buy it and spray down. Three times the first week. Then twice the second week ...and once the third week until they are gone.

No, I believe it may be MEALYBUG DESTROYER. See the posting in Nevada gardening for links to more about this.

It sort of depends on how big that thing is. Mealybug destroyer larvae are about twice the size of mealybugs. They will eat mealybugs (of course) but also aphids and other softbodied pests.
