 o
zone number questions ...??

I use the USDA zones that puts Albuquerque in zone 7 and Roswell, NM to the south and lower elevation in zone 6. Since Sunset Garden Book has another method, it places us both in their zone 10 it is confusing! Also, on plant labels from the nursery the tag gives either a minimum cold tolerance or also a zone number, what zone is the tag referring to???

If I had to guess I'd say usda zone is being used.

vieja,

Most nursery tags only have cold tolerance, either a specific temperature or a USDA zone. Unless it specifically states otherwise, assume USDA zones.

Sometimes cold tolerance is the least of your worries, and that's where Sunset may come in useful (and why Sunset zones are so beloved on the west coast, since the population is concentrated in areas with USDA zones 8b-10).

Vieja,
Roswell has gotten colder and has more cold snaps than Abq, hence the USDA rating of 6 in Roswell vs. 7 in Abq. But cold is only part of the story---so is heat. Roswell is usually warmer than Abq-Socorro almost any day, and often warmer than Las Cruces.

So, I too prefer Sunset in this case...though they are not a perfect zone system, either. Pretty much what grows in Roswell and Abq is the same, except the more tender plants like Italian cypress, oleander, etc, but some of those are iffy in parts of Abq, too, like the colder valley.
