Red soft leaf Yucca?

Posted by sbeau 7b TX (My Page) on

I saw a plant called a Phormium, on a gardening program. It looked similar to a soft leaf yucca, but with reddish and more upright leaves. Since it requires more water than I would give it, I'd rather find a yucca that is similar to the Phormium. I like the look of a soft leaf yucca, but not after they've grown a bit. Is there a soft leaf yucca with no stem or a very short one? Thanks for any suggestions.

There is a Manfreda or false Aloe with I think about 20 species. It requires a bit more water
than Yucca but less than Aloe. I think Manfreda maculosa aka Texas Tuberose is the most desirable
one of the genus with it's splashed red leaves. I like Manfreda virginica for it's fragrant flowers.

i have a 25 yr old soft leaf yucca that has been mother to more than a dozen others. when it gets too top heavy/bare bottomed, i simply lop it off to about a foot from the soil, section out the top, and start new plants. one will have leaves, other sections (depending on how long the stump is) will not, but will grow them. a new one will grow from the original stump.
