Euphorbia driving me nuts

Hi there,
We recently bought a house and I am just getting familiar with the garden. The previous owners had planted a bunch of euphorbia. This plant is now propagating EVERYWHERE. I dont' know if I am going to get rid of the plant completely, but I plan on definitely ripping most of it out. My question is, when do you cut back this plant so that it doesn't propagate so much. I think they planted this particular plant because of gophers, but we still get gophers in the backyard and I am not sure if it is making a difference. |

| Oh my, Euphorbia lathryus. It's the irritating sap that is said to repel gophers. Obviously it doesn't work. It reseeds easily.....as you've noticed. Rip it out, but be VERY careful, the latex sap can burn your eyes or other soft tissues if you rub them. Consider wearing plastic bags over your hands and then throwing the bag away when you are finished pulling and handling the plants. As for the seedlings, hoe, hoe, hoe. Perhaps one of the growth inhibiting herbicides would work......Dacthal like products. But in the long run, hoeing out the seedlings is safer. |
