Using decomposed granite in landscape/garden

Posted by karih California (My Page) on

Hello -- We recently pulled out some very ugly rock, and now the many neighborhood cats are using our front yard as a big, sandy litterbox.

We're thinking of laying down decomposed granite throughout the yard. I like the look of it. My question is, must I dig in borders or can I plant directly into the decomposed granite?

A landscaper told me I could not plant in the d.g., yet I swear the many homes I've seen in nearby Palm Springs, as well as Arizona and Nevada, are using d.g. in their yards and their plants went directly into it.

ANY help will be appreciated.

Thank you!
-- Kari

Our soil here in NM is decomposed granite. Other than acid loving plants (read not SW natives), we have few problems. It drains nice too. Good luck.

To plant in decomposed granite, scrape the rocks back, expose the dirt, dig the hole (put the dirt on a tarp), plant, and rake the granite back in place.

3/4 minus is coarse enough to discourage cats and compacts well.
